How to Setup a WordPress Blog

WordPress blogs are not becoming popular, they are leading by storm. More and more internet users create a blog just to see what all the hype is about. They than bump into the fact how they can make money from blogging on their certain niche. The purpose of this post is to show how to setup a WordPress blog, because many internet users who decide to get a blog setup most likely has no clue where to start…..

The main thing you need is a Domain Name.

Whats a Domain Name?
All computers that are connected to the Internet have a numeric IP address such as 74.52.105.194. Since mnemonic addresses like milanesemarketing.com are much easier to remember, we use the Domain Name System (DNS) to translate from the numeric IP address to a mnemonic domain name. Think about how our house as a mailing address, the same as every computer on the internet has a IP address.

When you go to register a Domain Name you would want to look for a unique one. Like for instance since my last name is Milanese and I got into Marketing, I decided to get milanesemarketing.com. This will also promote me very well when people visit my blog(Site). They see my name and it will get my name out into the Marketing Industry.

Now that you have your Domain Name you now need a Web Hosting company.

What is a Web Hosting company?
It is a company that takes peoples websites, or blogs and puts the specific files needed to have the website or blog visible onto the companies computer servers. They are called servers because they serve files (Websites) to the world.

The best Web Hosting company that makes it easy to setup a WordPress blog is called Hostgator…

Hostgator has to be one of the most reliable hosting company I have ever been with. The customer service is very helpful and is avilable 24/7.

Well, since I got the main 2 things that is needed to have your own blog let me tell you how to get it up and running… I would say after reading this, it will probably take you no more than 30 minutes. It also depends how long hostgator takes to send you your login information. It usually is pretty instant.

Steps to get your own WordPress Blog…

1: Click Here or the Hostgator Banner and select the web hosting option that fits you. I recommend the Baby Plan. Baby Plan lets you host unlimited domain names in case you decide to register another domain name.

2. Follow through your purchase with Hostagtor and wait for your account information details from Hostgator so you can login to your account to install wordpress blog.

3. When you receive you login information, there should be information to login to your cPanel. It’s usually yourdomain.com/cpanel and put in your login/password.

4. When logged into cPanel, scroll down and click on Fantistico Deluxe.

5. On the left side bar click on WordPress.

6. Select New Installation and Select the Domain Name you registered when you signed up with Hostgator.

7. Input your recommended Admin username and password and Click on Install WordPress.

8. Visit the Domain Name you Registered and Viola!!!

7 Free Internet Marketing Tips

Keeping up with all your competitors on the internet today can be very, very expensive. Websites can be expensive. Search Engine Optimisation is time consuming so expensive (ineffective seo is even more expensive!). Google Adwords is expensive when you don’t know what you’re doing.

But you know, it’s never been CHEAPER to market your Glasgow based business worldwide.

If you run a business you’re smart enough to learn any of the following internet marketing tips that will enable you to begin to market online effectively.

1. You Should Have An Open Source Website Content Management System

Basically, open source is free stuff. A content management system is simply a means by which non technical people can edit website content and even change your website design. If your website has a CMS, it will mean YOU can edit the content yourself, dialing out the web design company and so saving your business money. In years gone-by a good CMS costed THOUSANDS OF POUNDS. Now, you can get excellent content management systems for FREE.

There are a lot of Open Source CMS on the market today. Usually they are simple to set up (although you might need a bit of technical know-how) and easy to configure. A lot of them come with many kinds of templates that let you change the design of your site easily.

To add to that, you can easily add what are called extensions to your new cms that will add functionality to your site (like a forum, booking system or a poll).

To compete in Google today you need to be regularly adding good content to your site to attract visitors. A content managed website makes this easy and enjoyable and ultimately puts you back in control.

Hobo offers an open source cms configuration and set-up service called Arachnid (which you’ll need if your not willing to spend the weeks learning how to do it properly).

2. Google Local Business Centre

Yes! You can get to the top of Google – guaranteed! And for FREE (albeit in the Glasgow area and based on the number of competitors already featured). You can also get free directions to your business. It only takes about 24 hours to get listed above that pesky competitor who’s been there for the last 7 years! Try it out at Google Local Business Center before they do!

3. Google Analytics

Track your visitors for free. Find out where they come from and where on your site they go. You can even find out which exact keyword combination visitors typed into Google that lead you to get an email from your website. For most this is the only website statistics program you will ever need. And yes! It tracks everything, including visitors from Yahoo and MSN and other websites. Sometimes you get what what you pay for, and on some occasions, you actually get a lot more. Try Google Analytics FREE for yourself.

4. Get a Blog!

You’re website needs a blog! Yes, you might not know what this is – but everyone’s doing it (at least everone who is generating lots of visitors to their site!). A blog is ideal for your news section in 2009 and lets anyone in your organisation easily add content to your site if necessary through a simple online interface. As mentioned, we use it for our news section and basically it lets you add fresh news content easily without any wwebsite expertise and to boot it allows you to, via blog techy stuff, instantly promote whatever article you’ve written worldwide to blog search engines everywhere.

We use WordPress. It’s free, too, and probably the best! It takes minutes to install on your site and can be configured in about 4 hours to look and operate like the rest of your site (like ours). Download a copy at WordPress for your site.

What? You don’t have a website? Then you can set up a free blog on WordPress.com or Blogger (not ideal – but using this method you actually don’t need anything apart from an email address).

5. Organise Your Own Domains

Domains can be confusing. My advice? Set up an account with 123Reg.co.uk and manage all your domains here. Just the domains, mind. Get the hosting elsewhere. Open an account for free and start adding domains (web addresses) you want to own (domains cost about £10 for 2 years depending on whether it is a .com or .co.uk etc. Then, organise hosting, but not through 123. Why not try out…..

6. Organise Your Own Hosting

Through a reliable host, you can organise your domain/s through a plethora of packages. There are a bazillion hosts out there, a lot of them good. At the time of writing however I believe Rochen do not support .asp, which might be a problem for some.

However if you are following any (or all) of the advice on this page (ie open source CMS or blog using PHP/MySQL) make sure your host suppots these platforms.

Basically if you organise your own hosting and domains it really puts you in control. If you’re in control you call the shots with your web development company. It’s not a hard thing to learn how to do, either.

7. You don’t have to pay to get into or (free traffic from) Google. All you need is a link from a site already in the index (ie already in the Google results pages). Get a link from a good site, though, and your site could be completely spidered in a week. Then you too could enjoy more free stuff from Google – traffic! Kiss goodbye to all those seo companies who say they will get you into Google. Sweet!

1. What is a Domain Name ?

How would you react to this letter in your post ?

“Dear Sir,
We are sorry to advise you that we are no longer trading as your ISP and your web site name “www.localisp/~business/retail/videorecorderland.com” is no longer active”.

Consider the effect this would have on your business.

Think of all the locations where your URL is recorded, both.

  • Online – with customers, adverts, search engines and all the web sites that link to yours, and
  • Offline – your company stationery, business cards, letterheads, envelopes, newspaper ads, brochures, shipping labels, catalogs, etc. All these contacts are now LOST to you – they will visit your site only to be met by the ‘Url not recognised’ message.

Yes, simply. You can have a name which NEVER changes. This is a www.Domainname.com – a unique name which will always be yours, independent of an ISP.So can this be avoided ?

If this alone was the only benefit of a domain name it would still be a MUST for any business. But there are many more advantages and this article will review them, explain how to choose and obtain a domain name and how to move from an ISP based web site name to a domain web site.

2. What makes a good Domain Name ?

The key elements of a good domain name are

2.1 It should convey effectively the nature of your business

A name such as golfnews.com will immediately give the reader an idea of what the site contains, with no further description. It will also be easy to recall from memory at a later time.

But, a warning, you must also plan ahead for any future diversity.

Suppose you then decide to provide news about other sporting activities. It would make no sense to set up new names such as golfnews.com/boxing golfnews.com/tennis
The name of your site should be generic in order to allow for future variation. If you had chosen the more general “sportsnews.com” this gives you the flexibility to add sportsnews.com/golf sportsnews.com/boxing sportsnews.com/tennis

2.2 It should be easy to remember and to spell.

Think of the situations when you need to convey the spelling of your Url. It could be in spoken format (during a conversation, a phone call, in your voice mail) or printed format (on all your stationery). You want to make it as easy as possible for your customer to record it and to recall it later and, hopefully, to communicate it to others.

You need to avoid a name that is too long or one with confusing characters.

3. What are the benefits of a Domain Name ?

3.1. Portability

A domain name means that you are free to move to a different web host or ISP and leave the name unchanged.
Why would you want to move ? Some of the reasons could be:

  • A better standard of support (quick response and competent replies to technical questions)
  • Lower prices
  • Faster connectivity to your site
  • Better tools and features

Whatever the reason you are no longer tied to your old ISP.

3.2. A professional image for your company

Would you feel comfortable about ordering goods to an Email address of perkins23@localisp.com , where there is no way of finding any information about the company such as the postal address.

Contrast this to ordering from sales@VCRworld.com where you have the option of obtaining company details through their registered domain name (via http://www.internic.net/whois.html).

Think of the credibility it lends to your company to have a name based on the business: contrast this to a cheap sounding name possibly hosted on a free site.

3.3. Ease of use for your customer

A well chosen domain name will be shorter to enter into a browser and easier to say over the phone or appear on a business card. In addition a customer may guess that your site name is www.[yourcompany].com and reach it successfully.

3.4. Submission to search engines

Some search engines may not accept submissions from free (non-domain) sites

4. How to register a Domain Name

Domain names can be registered through many different companies (known as “registrars”) – a listing of these companies is available at ICANN: http://www.icann.org

You can register for 1 to 10 years – prices can vary anywhere between $10 to $20 per year.

Most Web Hosting companies will handle the registration process for you, but make sure that you are properly listed as the owner of the domain when it is registered.

5. How to choose a Web Host
Although a domain name will simplify your move to another provider if you are not happy, it is best to choose right the first time. Technical features apart here is a useful rule for choosing any company which provides a service: ensure that their level of support is first rate.If you have a business site on the web then you should aim for nothing less than a professional hosting site providing 24 hours support, who will give you a domain name – not one which incorporates their own name.

Do not tolerate automated messages with false promises to respond in 24 hours. Ignore what they claim to achieve and prove it for yourself. Send in questions and observe the quality and speed of response.

6. How to transfer to a domain site

If you are moving from a non-domain site to a domain site, typically with a new provider, you will not want to lose all the traffic currently visiting your old site.

Such traffic is coming from, for example

  • Other sites linking to yours
  • Existing articles or sales letters submitted to newsgroups or forums
  • Existing ads at other web sites
  • First, you change the individual pages on your old site to point to the new site.

However it is likely that there will still be unidentified sources conveying visitors to your site. What you can do is to ask the visitor where he heard about your site prior to redirecting him. A free gift may provide the incentive which provides this information.

Ideally you should have counters to tell you how many times your old pages are being accessed. Once you feel that no more traffic is reaching your old site or that it does not justify the cost of maintaining it you can cancel the original site. A final tip – depending on your relationship with your old provider there is no need to announce your intention to move until you are ready.
